AquaRox Grow Media is a lightweight kiln fired clay aggregate designed for use as grow media in hydroponic and aquaponic systems. It is also frequently used as a gravel replacement in aquariums, as a grow media for orchids and bonsai, and as an inexpensive bog filter media in garden ponds and fish farm systems. It is less than half the weight of gravel, making it safer and easier to work with, and features superior plant root anchoring characteristics compared to round clay media. AquaRox Grow Media is fired under extremely high temperatures in a rotary kiln, resulting in a porous, inert, and lightweight material. Exactly what you need in a high quality grow bed media!
Because of the porous nature of AquaRox, it tends to retain a large amount of moisture which promotes a more consistent moisture level for plant roots between flooding cycles. Aquaponics systems also benefit from the large amount of surface area AquaRox provides for the colonization of beneficial bacteria (nitrifying bacteria), that are essential to the nitrogen cycle (conversion of ammonia into nitrite and then into nitrate).
