Our HDPE liner is made of industrial strength, virgin high density polyethylene. This extremely durable liner is constructed of 3 HDPE layers (one white and two black) that are fused together to form a total thickness of 20 mil. It is suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications due its superior UV resistance. It can be used with either the white side or the black side exposed, offering additional design flexibility, based on design preferences. Fish safe and suitable for potable water storage. Unlike liners made of other materials, HDPE liners have been approved by US based organic certifying organizations like Oregon Tilth and others. How does HDPE Liner compare to PVC Liner?

How does HDPE Liner compare to EPDM Liner?

  • HDPE is less likely to tear or rip.
  • HDPE is more puncture resistant.
  • HDPE is lighter weight.
  • HDPE is non-porous, so it does not absorb anything from the water, including chemicals and odors.
  • HDPE is a more rigid material, so is less flexible and does not stretch like EPDM.



You should be aware of one potential drawback with HPDE liner. It is somewhat rigid, making it less flexible than most EPDM and LDPE liners. Depending on your design requirements this may make HDPE more difficult to work with than an EPDM or LDPE liner. Care must be taken when making corner folds, or working with planter shelves in a pond. However, most folds and shelves can be readily accomplished with a little skill and patience. If you have worked with PVC liner in the past, you will be familiar with this aspect of HDPE, as the two materials are very similar in this regard. Our best advice is to take your time. As long as you do, you should be very happy with the end result. If you require extemely detailed contours or very tight corners in your design, and are not concerned about seeking organic certification for your project, an EPDM or LDPE liner may be a better choice for you.

We design a lot of aquaculture and aquaponic systems. Three layer 20 mil HDPE is our preferred liner for DWC troughs (raft tanks), media based grow beds and fish tanks. The combination of durability, chemical resistance/stability and low cost makes it an excellent selection for these projects.
